The Biological Stain Commission just completed a productive and successful annual meeting in San Antonio. We did so in conjunction with the Annual Convention of The National Society for Histotechnology, an event that draws 700-800 people from the field, and thus provided a great venue for getting the message of the BSC out.

To best connect with this audience, we focused our sessions on practical aspects of staining. In the morning, four of our members gave oral presentations, including:

  • Chad Fagan on the certification process and the importance of using certified stains in histology
  • Carol Bain on preparing for the ASCP exam with respect to special stains.
  • Brian Finkleman and Bradly Turner on the importance of certified stains in pathology

Interest in these talks was high, with Brian and Brad presenting to a standing room only crowd.

In the afternoon, Sheila Criswell and her students supervised a wet lab, in which participants had the opportunity to preform H&E as well as six special staining procedures. And finally, we manned a booth in the exhibition all where all members of the NSH could come to learn about the BSC and sign up to receive more information. All together, nearly 100 people did so, providing us with many new contacts for future communications.

We are currently working on a web page that will highlight everything more thoroughly, but in the meantime, you can get more information by going to the 45th Annual Meeting page, which now includes links to some of the presentations.
