The Executive Committee
Executive committee members are responsible for the ongoing management of the BSC. They are selected by the membership and are ex officio members of the Board of Trustees
Bruce Cochrane
President
Dr. Cochrane is retired from a career of research and teaching in genetics, as well as a decade of senior academic leadership at both The University of South Florida and Miami University (Ohio). While his research involved use of biological stains, his connection to the BSC stemmed from the fact that Harold Conn, the founder of the BSC, was his grandfather and a significant influence on him while growing up. He first got engaged with the BSC as its 100th anniversary approached, becoming a trustee in 2023 and President in 2024. He is committed to sustaining Dr. Conn’s legacy and helping to guide the progress of the BSC into its second century.
Sheila Criswell
Vice President
Building on a career in cytology, histology, and medical laboratory science in her earlier career, Dr. Criswell became a faculty member at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2016 where she currently teaches courses in histology, histotechnology, and medical laboratory science. She also has an appointment in the College of Medicine as the Center for Cancer Research Biorepository Shared Resource director. Her research is focused on laboratory-related projects with master’s level students and encompasses diverse subject matters.
Carol Bain
Secretary
Carol Bain DVM (Brazil), HTL (ASCP)cm, is a veterinarian and ASCP-certified Scientist in Histotechnology with experience in education and diagnostic pathology. She has taught the principles and applications of biological staining to histotechnology students and developed educational materials focused on stain chemistry, quality, and laboratory practice. In her current work in a pathology laboratory, she applies and troubleshoots a wide range of staining techniques used in routine diagnostic testing. As a trustee of the Biological Stain Commission, she is committed to promoting the quality, reliability, and appropriate use of biological dyes while advancing education and best practices for laboratory professionals.
Brendan Boyce
Treasurer
Dr. Boyce is an internationally recognized expert in bone biology, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone diseases, and is a diagnostic surgical pathologist with a sub-specialty interest in bone and soft tissue pathology. He examines stained slides from patient specimens as well as from animals in his NIH-funded research laboratory, which studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate the formation and activation of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. These cells play essential roles in the maintenance of a healthy skeleton, and he studies how their functions are disturbed in common bone diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and postmenopausal and age-related osteoporosis.
The Trustees
Currently there are 12 trustees of the Biological Stain Commission, along with 2 special advisors. The special advisors to the Board of Trustees are Dr Natalie Garton (Leicester, UK) for microbiology and Dr Algy Kazlauciunas (Leeds, UK) for dye chemistry.
